IMPORTANT NEWS! Grapes Are A Rich Source Of Resveratrol, Providing Natural Beneficial Cardioprotective And Cancer-Preventive Effects

Red wine, which is made from grapes, is an excellent source of antioxidants known as flavonoids. As antioxidants, these flavonoids are believed to counteract the adverse health effects of a fatty diet and smoking. They achieve this by neutralizing free radicals that would otherwise damage the body and, consequently, increase the risk of disease.

Grapes are a rich source of valuable flavonoids and polyphenols including a compound called resveratrol. Resveratrol has beneficial cardioprotective and cancer-preventive effects.

Resveratrol is found in several different plants, such as mulberries and peanuts but grapes are by far the most consistent and abundant source of resveratrol there is.

Scientists believe that plants produce resveratrol in order to protect themselves from disease. In grapes, resveratrol acts as a protectant, guarding against pathogenic attacks and reducing the effects of environmental stress.

For example, resveratrol may help prevent heart disease by inhibiting platelet aggregation (clumping) and coagulation (thickening) while modulating cholesterol metabolism.

High potency, isolated resveratrol from grape seed extract was tested for its cancer-fighting abilities in a series of experiments. The leading researcher explained resveratrol helps keep cells from turning cancerous and inhibits the spread of cells that already are malignant.

One of the recent studies was an 18-week investigation involving mice that were predisposed to skin cancer. When these mice were fed a diet supplemented with resveratrol, the onset of cancer was significantly stunted. Resveratrol resulted in fewer skin tumors compared to the mice who were not exposed to this grape seed extract.

Human research has also demonstrated the cancer inhibiting properties of resveratrol. When resveratrol was combined with human leukemia cells, not only did the production of abnormal cells stop, but the culture of cancer cells also amazingly transformed back to normal.

The cancer and heart disease prevention benefits of resveratrol is very promising. Interestingly, resveratrol also showed better antiinflammatory effects than well established antiinflammatory drugs. In animal studies, resveratrol inhibited both the acute and the chronic phases of inflammation.

The powerful nutritive health benefits of the natural flavonoids and polyphenols including resveratrol found in grape seed extract is very exciting, especially since these compounds help the body to ward off heart disease and cancer.

The Risk of Cardiovascular Disease may be Lowered by Grape Seed Extract

Data from a growing body of research suggests that consuming foods rich in polyphenols such as red wine and grapes helps reduce the risk of heart disease.

Consumption of grapes, grape seed extract and grape products like red wine may be beneficial in preventing cardiovascular disease and the development of other chronic degenerative diseases.

Grape Polyphenols, a natural antioxidant found in grapes, work in many different ways to prevent cardiovascular and other inflammatory mediated disease. The seeds, skin, and juice from grapes contain several polyphenols, including resveratrol, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and flavonoids.

The antioxidant properties of grape polyphenols help slow and prevent cell damage caused by oxidation. Polyphenols decrease oxidation of "bad" cholesterol. Grape polyphenols also have other protective effects on the heart and blood vessels, including actions to reduce blood clotting, abnormal heart rhythms, and blood vessel narrowing.

Several studies support the disease preventing benefits of grapes. Studies in patients treated with grape seed extract show better blood flow and cholesterol levels. Drinking grape juice in another study showed improved blood flow in patients with coronary artery disease and lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

In France, lower rates of heart disease first raised the possibility that red wine might have health benefits. Subsequent studies show that grape seed extract might be a useful strategy to help lower the high rate of death from cardiovascular disease.

With growing interest in the use of functional foods and nutraceuticals to promote heart health, supplementation with grape seed extract, grape skin or red wine products for are valuable for a dietary approach in the maintenance of a healthy heart as well as prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Grape Seed Extract Eradicates Leukemia Cells According to U of K Study...

A Univerisity of Kentucky study discovered that exposure to Grape Seed Extract caused leukemia cells in the lab to die from apoptosis or cell suicide. In the experiment, three quarters of the cells died within a day.

Exposure to Grape Seed Extract caused a change to the cells' signaling pathway by activating a specific protein leading to the cells' death.

While prior studies of Grape Seed Extract on cancer cells have shown some activity, these new studies imply that Grape Seed Extract and other natural antioxidents may be inportant for the prevention and treatment of hematological malignancies and other cancers. But at this stage of the research, it's too early to make conclusions about grapes being chemo-protective.

Because it is know that eating fruits and vegetables helps prevent the development of cancer, the researchers were studying food based proanthocyanidins. They also found the antioxidant flavoniods in apple peel extracts to cause the cell death in cancer cells but not normal cells.

In the study, leukemia cells were exposed to different doses of Grape Seed Extract and found the apoptosis cell death expecially occured at high doses of Grape Seed Extract. They did not determine why the cell death effects cancer cells but not normal cells.

Want Lower Blood Pressure, Less Risk of Heart Damage? Maybe Grape Seed Extract Can Help ...

According to a study at Michigan U's Cardiovascular Center the phyto nutrients and antioxidants found in grape seed extract may actaully stimulate a genenic process which protects the heart, extending the benefits of grape extract beyound just lowering blood pressure like any diet of vegetables and fruit does.

In the study, subjects consumed a grape seed extract blend as part of high and  low salt diets and were compared to subjects receiving a common blood pressure medication.

After four months the people who's diets were high in salt but included the grape seed extract showed better heart functioning, lower blood pressure and less sign of heart damage than those who's diets didn't include the grape seed extract.

The people who ate a salty diets with a blook pressure drug where found to have lower blook pressure but their heart did not show the same damage protection as the grape seed extract consuming grouop.

There researchers explained that the effect on the genes from grape extract consumtion may have a bigger effect on health down the road than the changes that diet alone may bring.

The antioxidant Gluthathione is made in heart cells just like other it's made in other cells and helps defend against the effects of the oxidative stress caused by hight blood pressure.

Consuming the grape seed extract switched on the Glutathione producing process which could be seen by increased Glutathione levesl and may explain why the subjects who consumed the grape seed exract showed better heart function.

The California Table Grape Commission provided partial funding and supplied grapes and grape seed extract but did not participate in the conduct, design or analysis of the study. The National Institute of Health provided funding through a Service Award.
