Red wine, which is made from grapes, is an excellent source of antioxidants known as flavonoids. As antioxidants, these flavonoids are believed to counteract the adverse health effects of a fatty diet and smoking. Grapes are a rich source of valuable flavonoids and polyphenols including a compound called resveratrol. Resveratrol has beneficial cardioprotective and cancer-preventive effects.

Although resveratrol is produced in several different plants, such as mulberries and peanuts, grapes are the most consistent and abundant source.

Scientists believe that plants produce resveratrol in order to protect themselves from disease. Within the grape, resveratrol is thought to act as a protectant, guarding against pathogenic attacks and reducing the effects of environmental stress.

For example, resveratrol may help prevent heart disease by inhibiting platelet aggregation (clumping) and coagulation (thickening) while modulating cholesterol metabolism.

High potency, isolated resveratrol from grapes was tested for its cancer-fighting abilities in a series of experiments. The leading researcher explained resveratrol helps keep cells from turning cancerous and inhibits the spread of cells that already are malignant.

One of the recent studies was an 18-week investigation involving mice that were predisposed to skin cancer. When these mice were fed a diet supplemented with resveratrol, the onset of cancer was significantly stunted. Resveratrol resulted in fewer skin tumors compared to the mice who were not exposed to this grape extract.

Human research has also demonstrated the cancer- inhibiting properties of resveratrol. When resveratrol was combined with human leukemia cells, not only did the production of abnormal cells stop, but the culture of cancer cells also amazingly transformed back to normal.

The cancer and heart disease prevention benefits of resveratrol is very promising. Interestingly, resveratrol also showed better anti-inflammatory effects than well-established anti-inflammatory drugs. In animal studies, resveratrol inhibited both the acute and the chronic phases of inflammation.

A growing body of research data suggests that consuming foods rich in polyphenols from grapes, including red wine, helps reduce the risk of heart disease, according to a review article in the November issue of Nutrition Research.

Consumption of grape and grape extracts and/or grape products such as red wine may be beneficial in preventing the development of chronic degenerative diseases including cardiovascular disease reports the research team of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Adelaide, Australia.

Grape Polyphenols work in many different ways to prevent cardiovascular and other "inflammatory-mediated" diseases. Polyphenols are natural antioxidants found in grapes and some other plant foods. Their types and actions vary, depending on where in the grape they are found. Grape seeds, grape skin, and grape juice contain several types of polyphenols, including resveratrol, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and flavonoids.

Through their antioxidant effects, grape polyphenols help to slow or prevent cell damage caused by oxidation. Polyphenols decrease oxidation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) -a key step in the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Grape polyphenols also have other protective effects on the heart and blood vessels, including actions to reduce blood clotting, abnormal heart rhythms, and blood vessel narrowing.

Several studies support the disease-preventing benefits of grapes in humans. Studies in patients treated with grape seed extracts have shown improvements in blood flow and cholesterol levels. In other studies, drinking Concord grape juice has improved measures of blood flow in patients with coronary artery disease and lowered blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

Studies investigating the lower rates of heart disease in France called "French paradox"-first raised the possibility that red wine might have health benefits. The subsequent research further support that extracts of grapes and grape seeds might be a useful strategy to help lower the high rate of death from cardiovascular disease.

New Study Conducted At The University Of Kentucky Demonstrates Grape-Seed Extract Kills Laboratory Leukemia Cells...

An extract from grape seeds forces laboratory leukemia cells to commit cell suicide (known as apoptosis) according to researchers from the University of Kentucky. They found that within 24 hours, 76 percent of leukemia cells had died after being exposed to Grape Seed Extract.

The investigators report their findings in the January 1, 2009 issue of Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. This important new research demonstrates how they were able to provoke the leukemia cell signaling pathway using Grape Seed Extract which effectively led to cell death (apoptosis.) The research team found that the extract activates a specific protein (JNK) that regulates the apoptotic pathway.

Although this natural compound that has been studied extensively and proven to contain powerful antioxidant properties, no known research had been done testing the extract in hematological cancers, nor had the precise mechanism for activity been determined.

Previous research with Grape Seed Extract has shown activity in a number of laboratory cancer cells, including skin, breast, colon, lung, stomach and prostate cancers. The results of the new tests could have major implications for the use of natural nutritive agents such as Grape Seed Extract into prevention or treatment of hematological malignancies and possibly other cancers. The research team conducted their study at the Graduate Center for Toxicology at the University of Kentucky.

It is important to recognize at this stage that the research is not far enough along to suggest that people should eat grapes, grape seeds, or grape skin in excess to stave off cancer. Although his is very promising research, it is too early to conclude that this be considered chemo-protective.

Hematological cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma accounted for an estimated 118,310 new cancer cases and almost 54,000 deaths in 2006, ranking these cancers as the fourth leading cause of cancer incidence and death in the United States.

Given that epidemiological evidence shows that eating vegetables and fruits helps prevent cancer development, this team of researchers has been studying the food-derived bio-chemicals (known as proanthocyanidins) which are naturally present in fruits contribute to this beneficial effect. For example, the team has found that apple peel extract contains these flavonoids, which have antioxidant activity, and which cause apoptosis in several cancer cell lines but not in normal cells.

Based on those prior studies as well as findings from other researchers that Grape Seed Extract reduces breast tumors in rats and skin tumors in mice, they specifically looked at the effect of the compound in leukemia cells.

The researchers exposed leukemia cells to the Grape Seed Extract in various doses and found the marked effect in causing apoptosis in these cells at the higher doses. They also discovered that the extract does not affect normal cells, although they don't know precisely why.

They used pharmacologic and genetic approaches to determine how the extract induced apoptosis. They found that the extract strongly activated the JNK protein pathway, which then led to other pathways which control the cell cycle.


Benefit Of Eating Grapes May Help Lower Blood Pressure, Reducing Potential Heart Damage...

A University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center study suggests grapes may prevent heart health risks beyond the basic blood pressure-lowering impact that can result from a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. The heart-protective benefits may be the result of the phyto-nutrients and naturally occurring antioxidants present in grapes, stimulating a protective process in the genes that reduces damage to the heart muscle.

The controlled laboratory study was presented at the 2009 Experimental Biology convention in New Orleans. The researchers examined the effect of a blend of green, red, and black grapes that were mixed into the diet as part of either a high or low-salt diet. Comparisons were made between subjects consuming the grape powder and those that received a mild dose of a common blood pressure drug hydrazine.

After 18 weeks, the subjects that received the grape-enriched diet had lower blood pressure, better heart function, and fewer signs of heart muscle damage than the those that ate the same salty diet but didn't receive grapes.

Those that received the blood pressure medicine, along with a salty diet also had lower blood pressure, but their hearts were not protected from damage as they were in the grape-fed group.

There are the small changes that diet can bring, but the effect of grape intake on genes can have a greater impact on disease down the road, explained the researchers performing doctoral work in nutrition science at Michigan State University.

Heart cells, like other cells in the body, produce an antioxidant protein called Glutathione, which is one of the first defenders against damaging oxidative stress. High blood pressure causes oxidative stress in the heart and lowers the amount of protective Glutathione.

However, intake of grapes actually turned on Glutathione-regulating genes in the heart and significantly elevated Glutathione levels. This may explain why the hearts of grape-fed subjects functioned better and had less damage.

The study received funding from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, through a National Research Service Award. Although the current study was supported in part by the California Table Grape Commission, which also supplied the grapes and grape powder, the authors note that the commission played no role in the study's design, conduct, analysis or the preparation of the journal article for publication.

The latest results take research on the health benefits of grapes "a step further" by examining the mechanisms impacted by antioxidant-rich grapes.

Such naturally occurring phyto-nutrients have already been shown in other research to reduce other potentially harmful molecular and cellular activity in the body. The study further demonstrates that a grape-enriched diet can have broad effects on the development of hypertension and the risk factors that go with it.
