Biotin, which is found in certain multivitamin supplements, is a B complex factor whose primary role is in the metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. It’s major benefit, however, is in the strengthening of hair (and nails) according to nutritionists and other health professionals.
Although typical Biotin dosage recommendations are in the range of 30 micrograms daily, for hair strength, daily intakes of as much as one to three milligrams are suggested based on clinical trials. Like other water-soluble B vitamins, excess Biotin is excreted in the urine, so it’s considered quite safe. Biotin has been found to be especially beneficial for hair and nails when taken in conjunction with other nutrients including complete B complex vitamins (B1, B2, Niacin, B6, B12, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid), gelatin, cysteine and silicon.
