Arginine Discovery Could Help Fight Obesity

A group of researchers Texas AgriLife have discovered that Arginine, a natural amino acid, reduces fat mass in high calorie diet-induced obese laboratory rats and has enormous potential to help fight human obesity.

Considering the current epidemic of obesity in the United States and worldwide, the finding is especially important. Nutritionists in College Station and Senior Faculty Fellow in the department of animal science at Texas A&M University found dietary Arginine supplementation shifts nutrient partitioning to promote skeletal-muscle gain.

The discoveries were published recently in the Journal of Nutrition... In controlled laboratory experiments, rats were fed both low-and high-fat diets. They found that Arginine supplementation for a 12-week period decreased the body fat gains of low-fat and high-fat fed rats by 65 percent and 63 percent, respectively. They were also encouraged that the long-term Arginine treatment did not have any adverse effects on either group.

Foods naturally-rich in Arginine include seafood, as well as watermelon juice, nuts, seeds, algae, meats, rice protein concentrate and soy protein isolate. Currently, Arginine has not been incorporated into many of our foods, but may very well be included as fortified foods in the future.

The research suggests that Arginine may increase lean tissue growth. In pigs, it was found that dietary Arginine supplementation reduced fat accretion (growth) but increased muscle gain without affecting body weight. Another important observation according to the research was that dietary Arginine reduced serum concentrations of branched-chain amino acids. This metabolic change is now considered beneficial because elevated concentrations of branched-chain amino acids may eventually lead to insulin resistance in obesity.

In addition, Arginine can stimulate muscle protein synthesis, a powerful biochemical process that requires large amounts of energy. The resulting dietary energy would be utilized for lean tissue rather than fat gain.

The research, funded by the American Heart Association, will be presented in August at the 11th International Symposium on Amino Acids in Vienna, Austria.

Follow-up research is expected to include clinical studies with obese children and adults.

Members of the research team are all with the department of animal science at Texas A&M; Texas A&M Health Science Center; and the department of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.


Low Testosterone Appears To Increase Long-Term Risk Of Death

Men may not live as long if they have low testosterone, regardless of their age, according to a new study.

The new study, from Germany, adds to the scientific evidence linking deficiency of this sex hormone with increased death from all causes over time, so-called "all-cause mortality."

The results should serve as a warning for men with low testosterone to have a healthier lifestyle, including weight control, regular exercise and a healthy diet, reported researchers from Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald, Institute for Community Medicine.

The researchers believe it is very possible that lifestyle determines levels of testosterone.

In the study, the team looked at death from any cause in nearly 2,000 men aged 20 to 79 years who were living in northeast Germany and who participated in the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). Follow-up averaged 7 years. At the beginning of the study, 5 percent of these men had low blood testosterone levels, defined as the lower end of the normal range for young adult men. The men with low testosterone were older, more obese, and had a greater prevalence of diabetes and high blood pressure, compared with men who had higher testosterone levels.

Men with low testosterone levels had more than 2.5 times greater risk of dying during the next 10 years compared to men with higher testosterone, the study found. This difference was not explained by age, smoking, alcohol intake, level of physical activity, or increased waist circumference (considered a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease).

In cause-specific death analyses, low testosterone predicted increased risk of death due to cardiovascular disease and cancer but not death of any other specific cause.

DPC Biermann, Bad Nauheim, Germany, provided the testosterone reagent, and Novo Nordisc provided partial funding for the study.
