Specific Food-Nutrients To Help You Look Great!
As you know, eating sensibly helps to maintain a healthy lifestyle, but it also helps to maintain a healthy appearance. Here are the 10 foods and food- derived nutrients that not only help you feel your best, but help you look great, too.
Vitamin C:
Vitamin C helps the body fight infection and disease. It boosts the immune system and also promotes healing. Vitamin C is essential to collagen production . . . Collagen helps the skin remain elastic but firm, which keeps the skin wrinkle and line free. Citrus fruits, strawberries, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and cabbage are all Vitamin-C-rich foods and their juices are also packed with this important vitamin and related nutritional factors.
Chocolate:
Dark chocolate is an excellent source of valuable immune-building antioxidants. Chocolate has positive effects on your mood by pumping up endorphins and serotonin, which help to give you an overall calm and pleasant feeling. And when you feel good, you look good.
Garlic:
The health-enhancing effects of garlic have been widely known for centuries. In studies, this nutritive food has been shown to reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol and even prevent cancer. Keep in mind that garlic is high in antioxidants, which will help you stay young looking. If you cannot stand the smell or taste, take it in supplement form for convenient daily upkeep.
Green Vegetables:
Fresh vegetables such as spinach, collard greens and kale are rich in Vitamin A, C, E, iron and fiber. Considering the known benefits of vitamin C, your intake of vitamin A and E is just as important to looking your best! Vitamin A has significant antioxidant properties and helps maintain natural moisture for eyes, skin and mucous membranes. Vitamin E is essential for healthy, smooth and younger looking skin.
Green Tea:
Rich in powerful natural antioxidants, green tea has also been shown to lower cholesterol, improve immune function and reduce the risk of specific types of cancer. If you are a coffee drinker, try replacing your morning cup of “java” with a cup of green tea. Without cream, sugar or other artificial flavorings added to it, you may also notice a reduction in fat retention while satisfying your caffeine requirement.
Essential Fatty Acids:
Essential fatty acids (EFA) including omega-3 and omega-6 are known as “good fat,” which assists cellular functioning. This helps skin, hair, nails, muscles and practically everything important to your physical appearance. Like other good, highly- nutritious foods, EFAs help the cells to function properly, which helps to clear up skin and prevent blemishes, reduce wrinkles, and also helping to improve the condition of hair and nail growth.
Low-Fat Milk and Dairy Foods:
Milk (and other healthy low-fat dairy products) are rich in calcium, vitamins B2, B-12 and D. Calcium, combined with the calcium-absorption booster vitamin D, helps to maintain strong bones, and healthy teeth. Vitamins B2 and B-12 are essential for red blood cell growth, which helps to carry essential oxygen to cells throughout the body. Hair and skin will look radiant, more youthful, livelier and healthier with proper daily intake of these key “beauty” nutrients.
Soy:
Soy proteins are bountiful in amino acids, vitamin E and protective anti-oxidants. These amino acid components help the skin retain moisture, help smooth out skin’s appearance and improves its natural elasticity.
Water:
Drinking plenty of water every day helps the skin look soft, supple and more youthful. By keeping the body properly hydrated, your overall appearance will benefit, from improved skin texture, as well as hair and nails. If you are feeling bloated, it may be due to an increase of sodium in the body. Increase your intake of water to help flush it out. Water also helps in the natural weight loss process by reducing water weight and replenishes water loss during strenuous workout activity.
Yogurt:
Since yogurt is a beneficial dairy product, all the nutritional benefits of milk also hold true for yogurt. Yogurt also contains friendly bacteria, which aids in digestion, improves the immune system and can help hydrate and cleanse the skin when used as a mask.
Researchers Recommend People Over 65 Should Take High Dose Vitamin D To Prevent Falls and Fractures
A daily supplement of Vitamin D at A dose of 700-1000 IU reduces the risk of falling among older people by 19% according to a study published on the British Medical Journal website. However, a dose of less than 700 IU per day has no effect.
Each year, one in three people aged 65 and older experience at least one fall, with nearly 6% resulting in a fracture. Fall prevention has therefore become a public health goal especially as the older segment of the population grows. Several trials have shown that Vitamin D improves balance and strength among older people, while others have found no significant effect on the risk of falling.
An international team of researchers analyzed the results of eight fall prevention trials to assess the effectiveness of Vitamin D in preventing falls among older individuals (aged 65 or more). Differences in study design and quality were taken into account to minimise bias. The pooled results showed important benefits from supplemental Vitamin D on fall prevention depended on treatment dose.
Supplemental Vitamin D of 700 IU - 1,000 IU per day (Vitamin D2 or Vitamin D3) reduced falls by 19% and up to 26%.
IU is an international unit of measurement for fat-soluble vitamins and other biologically active substances. This effect was independent of age, type of dwelling or additional calcium supplementation. The effect was significant within two to five months of starting treatment and extended beyond 12 months.
It's important to note supplemental Vitamin D did not reduce falls at a dose of less than 700 IU per day.
The use of active forms of Vitamin D did not appear to be more effective than 700-1000 IU supplemental Vitamin D.
To reduce the risk of falling, a daily intake of at least 700-1000 IU supplemental vitamin D is warranted in all individuals aged 65 and older, say the authors.
Higher doses may be even more effective and should be explored in future research to optimize the fall prevention benefit with Vitamin D, they conclude.
